Sabbatical Policy: An Introduction

For the past five and a half years, Megan and David Collins have served as the Co- Pastors of Maitland Presbyterian Church. Both Megan and Dave grew up in Central Florida and started their education as students of the preschool at what was then known as First Presbyterian Church of Maitland. Dave became a member of the church as a teenager, joined the youth group, and Megan joined him on the Living Room outreach team in the late 90’s. She then became an intern in youth ministry after college. They were married by the Rev. Dick Meyer in the sanctuary and explored their call to ministry with the Rev. Bruce Hedgepeth, who was the Associate Pastor in the congregation. They were called into youth ministry and moved to Deland to serve as youth directors before leaving for seminary in Princeton, NJ. After seminary, they served for ten years in churches in Iowa and Ohio, both separately and together, before God called them back home. They returned to serve at Maitland as Co-Pastors in 2015.

In the summer of 2022, they will have completed seven years in ministry with Maitland Presbyterian Church. The past five years have been full of new ministries and the strengthening of the long term programs of the church. To best prepare for the next chapter of ministry together with the congregation, the Collins have requested a sabbatical for June, July and August of 2022. The session adopted the Presbytery’s Sabbatical Policy at their January 2021 meeting. The Presbytery sabbatical policy can be viewed by clicking on the PDF file below. In preparing for sabbatical, the pastors will partner with both the Session and the Sabbatical Planning Team made up of members from the congregation. Members serving in this group are Beth and Rick Taylor, Terry and Carol Hadley, Cyndee and Scott Maxwell, Melanie Stein, and Laurie Rodriguez. This group represents a variety of ages, attend both worship services, and serve in leadership roles, including but not limited to Elder, Deacon, Stewardship, Trustees, Communication, Personnel, the PNC and COM. These leaders have been asked to partner with the Session, congregation and pastors to prepare for the sabbatical. The sabbatical team and the session will be reading together Robert C. Saler’s book Planning Sabbaticals: A Guide for Congregations and their Pastors.
